Cherrydale Notes
Surprise, Surprise!
Have you ever been surprised? It can be a good or not-so-good thing. Surprise parties are generally good; unexpected large financial bills are not. It all depends on the context of the surprise: do we want it or like it; are we receptive to it or not? Our attitude is what matters here. I’ve known folks who don’t like surprise parties for one reason or the other. They just don’t like them and won’t change their minds.
Paul seems to have been ‘Surprised by Grace’ as he indicates in the passage below. He is thankful for the grace of God in his life. He tells of his struggle to ‘do the right thing’ and how he continued with this struggle. He evidently took this surprise in a good way and was happy about it. He was receptive to it. Attitude does matter.
May we have the grace to be receptive to the surprises in our lives, no matter what they are, and may we be receptive to the people that God brings into our lives, each and every one of them, and may we also be “Surprised By Grace!”
Come to church this Sunday, here or wherever you are and open yourself to whatever surprise that may come.

Sunday Worship: 10 am
Sermon Title: Surprised By Grace Dr. Mahaffey preaching.
This Sunday’s Text: Romans 7: 15-25; 8:1-2 I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me.
So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!
So then, with my mind I am a slave to the law of God, but with my flesh I am a slave to the law of sin.
Life in the Spirit
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

AFGHANISTAN: UMCOR RESPONDS TO FLASH FLOODS
The same torrential rains wreaking havoc on Pakistan are also causing destruction and displacement in neighboring Afghanistan. Some 106 people died and thousands of homes were destroyed in 15 of Afghanistan's 34 provinces due to flash flooding over the past month.
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), together with the International Rescue Committee (IRC), provided tents to the 800 affected families in the Mohammed Agha District of Logar province who lost their homes in the flooding, meeting 100 percent of the need for temporary shelter.
UMCOR continues to assess the damages in Logar, particularly to water sources, and the need for more permanent housing, as part of its ongoing response to the emergency.
Your gift to Afghanistan Emergency, UMCOR Advance #602225, helps UMCOR respond to these and other urgent needs.
PAKISTAN: FLOOD-AFFECTED AREAS STILL GROWING
Flood-affected areas of PakistanEngland, Bangladesh, or Cuba" and continue to grow, according to the United Nations. Some 17.2 million people are "significantly affected," 1.2 million homes are destroyed, and 800,000 people are completely cut off by floodwaters. are equal to the "entire size of
At the end of last week, more than a million people were evacuated from threatened towns in Sindh province, said news reports. A total of six million people have been displaced since the flooding began more than a month ago.
UMCOR is working with partners Church World Service, Muslim Aid, and GlobalMedic in Pakistan, and last week supplied a new grant to GlobalMedic to bring medical aid, via an inflatable field hospital, and clean water to Punjab province.
Your help is urgently needed. Please give to International Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #982450, and earmark your check for Pakistan Emergency.
US: KATRINA, FIVE YEARS LATER
Sunday, August 29, marked the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which ravaged the US Gulf Coast of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The most destructive storm in US history, Katrina caused 1,800 deaths, drove more than a million people from their homes, and provoked $125 billion in damages.
United Methodist Bishop William W. Hutchinson of Louisiana said UMCOR was there from the start. "UMCOR workers have never left our side," he wrote in a UMNS commentary. "They have shepherded us through five years of response. They are still with us, as United Methodists are still fully engaged in recovery—the last of the major denominations on the ground."
"I feel UMCOR has been faithful to our constituents and good stewards of the donations they entrusted to us," Rev. Tom Hazelwood, UMCOR executive for US disaster response, wrote in a blog. "Lives of both those who received assistance and those who volunteered were touched, and, I pray, God was glorified."
The 2010 hurricane season is underway. Your gift to US Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #901670, helps those in the United States who are affected by storms, floods, and other disasters.
