Cherrydale Notes

Cherrydale Notes
3701 Lorcom Lane
Arlington, VA 22207
Rev. Dr. Elizabeth A. Foss, Pastor

This Sunday:
Scout Sunday, February 12: We honor our Scouts during the 11:00 am worship this day. Troop 149 and Pack 149 have a long history with our church and has helped with many projects around the church. We also host several Girl Scout troops during the week who also help around the church. Thank you to the scouts and their leaders for all they do.

The next Lunch Bunch will be held in Montgomery Hall on Sunday, February 12th following the 11:00 Worship Service.  Sunday, February 12th is also Scout Sunday, so consider bringing generous portions to share with our lunch guests.  Please bring a Main Dish, Side Dish, Salad or Dessert.  Rolls and Beverage will be provided.

The Adult Sunday School has begun the study of the Book of Genesis.  Why are there two slightly different creation stories at the beginning of Genesis?  Why does God seem to always favor younger sons over older sons in Genesis?  Which person in Genesis has his name changed to Israel by God?  What promise does God make to Noah after the flood?  Join us as we share our questions, faith, and ideas on the first book of the Bible.  The Adult Sunday School meets each Sunday morning at 9:30 in the Emurian Room.

CHOIRS FROM CLARENDON UMC AND CHERRYDALE UMC
LEAD WORSHIP ON FEBRUARY 19

 Dear Cherrydale Members and Friends,

This note is to remind you of a very special musical event at our church on Sunday, February 19 at the 11 AM worship service.  The Celebration Singers (Lisa Gibbs-Smith, director) and the Adult Choir (J. Reilly Lewis, director) of Clarendon UMC will be joining our Sanctuary Choir to lead the music on Transfiguration Sunday. And in recognition of February as Black History Month, the choirs will be sing arrangements of .two great spirituals, "Great Day" (Carol Gilmore, soloist) and "Ain't Got Time to Die" (Jim Gibbs, soloist). Nearly 40 singers will be in attendance!

This is a service you will not want to miss!  Invite your friends and come to greet fellow Methodists from our sister church Clarendon UMC. A reception, sponsored by the Sanctuary Choir, will be held in Montgomery Hall following the worship service.

February 22 Ash Wednesday Services: This year, we’ll offer 3 services for the imposition of ashes: 6:30 am, 12 noon and 7:00 pm. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season. The ashes serve as a sign of our mortality.

Lenten Classes on Northern Exposure Theology Begin February 29
In 1990, a TV show titled Northern Exposure made its debut. Colorful characters and
quirky plots propelled this show into the hearts of millions of viewers, earning the CBS
series seven Emmy awards between its 1990 debut and its demise six seasons later.
In season 1, we meet Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow), an urban New York yuppie who consents to four years of rural servitude after Alaska pays for his medical school education.
Joel's fish-out-of-water adventures drive the show, but it's the quirky ensemble of
characters--Chris, the DJ/philosopher (John Corbett), Holling, the bartender (John Cullum),
Maurice, the town patriarch (Barry Corbin), Ed, the filmmaker (Darren E. Burrows),
and Maggie, the bush pilot (Janine Turner), among others–-that keeps the series consistently
entertaining. The writing is brilliant, and theological themes are richly woven into each episode.
Beginning on Wednesday, February 29, Rev. Elizabeth will lead a class using the series. We will talk about the theological themes which are found in the narrative of each episode and talk about how we find those themes written into the narratives of our own lives. The first session will be an introduction and will feature the first episode of Northern Exposure, which introduces the cast. In successive weeks, we will talk about topics such as prayer, death, and community.
Each Wednesday, we will gather for dinner beginning at 6, and then begin watching an episode at 7:00 p.m., followed by discussion from 7:45 – 8:30 p.m. Please plan to come, and feel free to invite friends, as well!

Stop Hunger Now: We have a date to help make 10,000 (yes, really!) meals to help feed lots of hungry people in our area. We’ll work through Stop Hunger Now (stophungernow.org) and we need lots and lots of help that day, March 11. Join us and help feed many people. Go to the website and read about this organization.

Upcoming Mission Trip: Volunteers needed for adult (men and women) mission trip to the Henderson Settlement in Pineville, Kentucky, May 27-June 2. No special skills required. Contact the church office.  We’ll have a planning meeting on March 4 after church.
