Children and FamiliesAt Cherrydale, we strive to nurture families, and to include children in every aspect of church life
Our Current Sunday School Lesson (February 26 and March 4), Calling the Disciples: One of Jesus' first acts, according to Mark, was to gather a team of followers. Jesus did not choose experts in theology, veterans of faith, or even people with trained leadership skills. He chose ordinary people who had probably never traveled more than a few miles from their homes. Today, Christ continues to invite ordinary people, like us, to become followers: to learn, to grow, to make a significant difference. As we listen to and respond to his call, we use gifts we might not even recognize as Christ's work shines through us.
Bible verse: And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you into fishers for men." Immediately, they left their nets and followed him. (Mark 1:17-18)
Sunday School Schedule: Children K through 8th meet at 9:30 am in the Chapel for opening. From there, children go to activity stations by age groups. Click here for a description of the program. Questions or comments? Contact our Children's Ministries Staff

![]() Cherrydale Cheetahs Sunday School for children K through 8th Grade: Come experience our Rotational Sunday School! We study the Bible in many ways: through art, cooking, games, storytelling/drama, and more! Sunday School begins at 9:30 am in the Chapel for children k through 8th grade. The preschool Sunday school class meets during the 11:00 worship service. What is rotational Sunday School you ask?
Imagine a Sunday school classroom where children examine Van Gogh’s Starry Night and paint their own version while discussing God’s promise to Abram when God said, “Look at the sky and try to count the stars; you will have as many descendants as that.” (Genesis 15:5, Good News) And can you imagine visiting the church kitchen for Sunday School class to find some children assembling a fruit salad while others are frying tortillas? They tell you they are making the kinds of food that might have been served when Abraham held a feast when Isaac was weaned (Genesis 21:8).
In a rotational setting, the same Bible story or theme is taught for several weeks. Each week, the children rotate to a different station. The story remains the same, but children encounter it in different ways in each station. Stations include: cooking, art, music & movement, science, games, storytelling, computers and video. A typical Sunday begins with all children meeting in the Chapel for an opening prayer and a brief activity or discussion to introduce the day's lesson. Then, children go with their age-level class to one of the stations for a Bible story coupled with hands-on projects and activities.
After the last week of rotations, all of the children come together and invite the congregation to join them in working on a mission project that further reinforces the lesson, and helps the children learn to apply the Bible lesson to their everyday lives.
Repetition is an important part of the rotation approach. The more different ways children explore a story or concept, the more it is reinforced in their memories. The variety of experiences keeps interest high throughout the unit. Teachers teach the same lesson, with age-level adjustments, for the length of the rotation. Rotational learning is exciting for students and teachers alike, as teachers teach to their strengths and students experience Bible stories in the ways they learn best. Rotational learning is grounded in the work of Howard Gardner in Multiple Intelligences Theory. Rotational learning is active learning, emphasizing each of the first seven intelligences that Gardner identified (spatial, linguistic, logical, kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal and intrapersonal). Rotational learning is an extremely flexible model that adapts well to many settings.

Youth Ministry is grounded in the Wesleyan principles of Education, Worship, Devotion, Justice, Compassion, and Community Building. Teens actively participate in service projects, Covenant Discipleship groups, Confirmation, and as assistants in Vacation Bible School. They also help lead Sunday worship by singing in the choir and serving as liturgists, crucifers, acolytes and speakers. Open Hearts. Open Minds. Open Doors. |
